Groupings do a few things for us. Attribute development is a large part of it but an equally important role is to simulate the escalation of armed combat. If you are fighting with someone and their basic attacks aren't breaking through your defense, or even worse for them, they are eating a lot of your counter strikes they are going to try to mix things up. That could mean grabbing your weapon, trying to punch with their off hand, whatever the case may be. Groupings teach us to respond to these situations and develops the left hand, the "Feeler". Mastering groupings and developing the skill and speed of the left hand is what it is all about. Grandmaster Taboada often says the difference between a good escrimador and a great escrimador is the quality of the left hand.
